How Can I Help
Small Steps, Big Change
As Much as You Can…
For a long time, activists, scientists, and community leaders have been saying that we all need to do what we can to help the environment. We, as an ecological foundation, strongly encourage this as well. Our work focuses on creatures that are often unnoticed but play a crucial role in keeping the world as we know it functioning. It’s no exaggeration to say that the food economy – and thus social and economic stability worldwide – depends on pollinating insects.
The world is big, and we, as individuals, cannot change everything… And we won’t – but that doesn’t mean that our small-scale actions are meaningless.
Jacek Wieczorek, The Bee Must Be Foundation
Let’s help as best we can, in whatever ways we can. Each of us can contribute, in small or large ways. The most important thing is not to lose sight of the idea of helping and to try to incorporate it into daily life while sharing it and educating others.
When we founded the Foundation, we created a Code of Good Practices – a collection of tips and guidance on what each of us can do to support pollinating insects.
If you want to help pollinators, keep these points in mind:
- Reduce frequent lawn mowing. Allow seasonal flowers to grow. If you prefer a neatly trimmed lawn, find a compromise - leave at least part of it for insects.
- Whenever possible, plant species that bloom early - even as early as March - when pollinators have very limited food sources. Choose native plants that naturally occur in your region.
- Avoid using herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. If their use is absolutely necessary, always follow the instructions carefully.
- When making decisions about urban development, choose parks and green spaces over parking lots and paved squares. Create “ecological corridors” that connect larger green areas and are planted with pollinator-friendly vegetation to provide food and shelte
